Tips

We have been in this business for many years and over the years we have come up with some very effective ways of looking after your carpet, so here are some of our handy tips:

  1. Carpet is made of fibers just like your clothes
  2. How to keep your carpet cleaner for a longer period of time and extend the life of your carpet
  3. When vacating a property
  4. When making a booking with O'Shea's please remember

  1. Carpet is made of fibers just like your clothes

    • You wash your clothes regularly, so you should clean your carpet regularly… after all you don’t walk on your clothes!!
    • If your clothing is soiled and doesn’t respond to the first ‘wash’ you will generally get better results with subsequent ‘washes’. Your carpet is the same, if it hasn’t been cleaned regularly you may not be completely satisfied with the first clean, it may require subsequent cleans to achieve the results that you are looking for
    • Set realistic expectations when having your carpet cleaned. Carpet cleaning does not and cannot make your carpet new again. If you are wanting new carpet this will come at a much higher price than a clean. You should take the following information into consideration when setting your carpet cleaning expectations:
      • How old is the carpet?
      • How much traffic goes over the carpet?
      • What type of traffic is on the carpet? (children, pets, elderly)
      • How heavily soiled is it?
      • What type of soiling is on the carpet? (eg. A dining area may have heavy food and drink spills)
      • How often has it been cleaned?
      • Has it had a stain protector on it?
      • What type of vacuum cleaner do you use?

  3. How to keep your carpet cleaner for a longer period of time and extend the life of your carpet

    • Well it’s an oldie but a goody…. Take your shoes off! Leave your shoes at your front door or only wear them on hard floors and remove them before you go onto carpeted areas. It sounds old fashioned but it works! Leave a shoe rack in the place that you want everyone to leave their shoes.
    • The more you vacuum the better…. You cannot vacuum too much or too often!!
    • Use an upright vacuum clean with a powerhead or an agitator. As a last result you could try a turbo head. If you insist on using a ‘barrel’ vacuum cleaner make sure you can get a powerhead, agitator or turbo head as an optional attachment. Hoover and Miele have options available to suit these requirements. O’Shea’s can supply these for very competitive prices.
    • Change the filters and bags in your vacuum cleaner regularly to ensure optimal performance.
    • Use a stain protector on your carpet, this will ensure best results when you have your carpets cleaned. It will also make it easier for you to spot clean between professional cleans.
    • Purchase a properly sized entry mat (the bigger the better, but there must be room for at least two steps to sufficiently wipe soil from feet before encountering the installed carpet).

  5. When vacating a property

    • You should remove all furniture before the carpet is cleaned, this will ensure the best results all over your carpeted areas.
    • When you are vacating a rented property we HIGHLY recommend a DELUXE clean. The DELUXE clean will help you secure your bond. History has proven that carpet in rental properties does not commonly receive the care that it requires by previous tenants eg.
      • The carpet probably isn’t cleaned or replaced regularly
      • Carpet probably does not have a stain protection
      • Chances are it has not been vacuumed regularly or vacuumed with a recommended style of vacuum cleaner (we have come across instances when tenants don’t even have a vacuum cleaner)
      • Drinks may not have been wiped up quickly
      • Pets may have been inside on carpeted areas
    • When renting a property it is helpful to take photos of the carpet when you move in, making note of areas that have stains and soiling.
    • If you are selling a property a DELUXE carpet clean is a much more cost effective option than new carpet. If you require new carpet call us for a quote (08) 8355 5727, we have a large range of carpet available at wholesale prices.
